Types of Biofuels

There are two main types of biofuels: first-generation and second-generation biofuels.
First-generation Biofuels

Second-generation Biofuels

Various processes produce these fuels, including pyrolysis, gasification, and fermentation. Common examples of second-generation biofuels are bio-oil, biomethane, and biohydrogen.
The main difference is that second-generation biofuels, like biomass, don’t compete with food production and have fewer negative impacts on food prices, security, and the environment.

Typically, biomass refers to non-processed fuels that can be used to create energy and remain in a solid form.
