How Frosts Garden Centre strengthened its low-carbon heating strategy 

Located in Woburn Sands, Milton Keynes, Frosts Garden Centre is one of the busiest garden centres in the region. The large, established site includes extensive plant nurseries, a restaurant, a food market, offices, and communal areas, all of which require reliable, consistent heating throughout the year. 

As part of a wider group, Frosts has made long-term sustainability a core priority. Across its centres, the business: 

  • Recovers energy from 38% of waste materials, which includes sending all food waste to anaerobic digestion to generate electricity and organic fertiliser. 
  • Recycles 61% of its waste, including over 50 tonnes of cardboard every year (that’s about the same weight as half a plane), which is made into new packaging. 
  • Only sends 1% of waste to landfill, with a stated ambition to eliminate landfill waste entirely. 

The group also invests heavily in on-site renewables, including solar PV at its Woburn Sands site, which generates an average of 145,000 kWh of electricity each year, alongside electric vehicle charging points and biomass heating systems delivering net-zero carbon heat. 

The Challenge: reliable heating for a busy, large-scale garden centre 

Frosts were already using biomass heating, but the existing system of two Italian boilers required staff to bucket-feed wood pellets on a daily basis to keep it running. 

For a business focused on efficiency and sustainability, this system fell short. Frosts needed a solution that could support continuous operation across their large commercial space without the need for daily intervention, while also aligning with its wider ESG commitments and long-term decarbonisation strategy. 
 

The Solution: ETA biomass, supplied by Innasol and installed by BioMech 

Innasol worked alongside its certified installation partner BioMech to replace the existing equipment with a new biomass heating system.  

Given the size and demands of the site, an ETA eHAC 60 kW wood pellet boiler was selected as the perfect option to provide reliable, automated heating across the garden centre, offices, communal areas and underfloor heating systems.  

Because the site already had a wood pellet store in place, this was successfully integrated into the new ETA system by adapting it to suit ETA’s rotary valve feed for more efficient and consistent fuel delivery. 

Installation partner: BioMech 

Based in Hereford, BioMech specialises in biomass boiler installation, servicing, system integration, and long-term maintenance across the UK. Their mission is to deliver sustainable, efficient biomass solutions that contribute positively to both the environment and society. 

The installation was delivered on site by mechanical engineer Jon Mayne and electrical engineer Steve Jones. Both have over 15 years’ experience in biomass heating and have completed full Innasol training. 

The result: dependable renewable heat without daily oversight 

Since commissioning in November, the ETA boiler has operated continuously without interruption and has delivered exactly what the client was looking for: reliable, low-intervention heating for one of the busiest sites in the city. 

Day-to-day running is straightforward, as staff carry out basic checks, empty the ash bin, and monitor the pressurisation system, without the need for daily manual pellet feeding. 

With the new ETA biomass boiler in place, Frosts Garden Centre now has a heating system that works reliably in the background, supporting the site’s low-carbon ambitions while meeting the practical demands of a large, busy operation.
