Need to reach carbon goals quick?

‘Compliance with company carbon goals is a key driver for green retrofit in the UK Construction Industry

There are three key reasons why senior estimators, commercial directors or heads of sustainability come and talk with us about renewable energy, like biomass in their building.

The second of those reason are: They need help complying with their company’s carbon and energy goals.

There are organisations which are key in being able to reach such goals and helping to support businesses:

1. LEED stands for leadership in energy and environmental design. They are a green building verification program that recognises best-in-class building strategies and practices. Buildings that are LEED certified help to save money and resources and have a positive impact on the health of occupants/tenants whilst still promoting renewable clean energy. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification.
2. Energy Star is an environmental protection agency voluntary program that helps businesses and individuals save money and protect our climate through superior energy efficiency. The energy star program was established by EPA in 1992 under the authority of the clean air act section 103(g). section 103 (g) of the clean air act directs the administrator to conduct basic engineering research and technology programs to develop, evaluate and demonstrate non-regulatory strategies and technologies for reducing air pollution.

Energy star and LEED-approved office space had an impressive rental premium of 6%. In addition, operating expenses were 30% lower for energy star compared to non-energy star buildings, which had 9.8% lower utility expenditures too.

This fact is a massive contribution to the compelling return on investment for green retrofits in buildings and organisations that are committed, either through their brand values or carbon compliance, to be mindful.

The UK government are set guidelines to help businesses form a structure when it comes to reaching specific goals, and we agree with them as they are a wide-ranging view, where all of us in the industry contribute to setting the standard, providing the technology and way, and implementing. The guidelines are as follows:

• Setting national policy and strategy
• Reducing the demand for energy and helping people and businesses to use energy more efficiently
• Investing in low carbon technologies, like biomass
• Publicly reporting carbon emissions from businesses and the public sector
• Taking international action

The key point in this list is strategy, investing and reporting. With a clear vision, which we believe the UK has been working towards, and investing in options (like with incentives) and reporting on it so activation groups can advise further ideas. Commercial organisations considering the switch to be independent of fossil fuels and green retrofit their existing building stock or build new standards can absolutely rely on that the direction towards a coordinated renewable energy future is absolutely the right investment. From EU standards to UK initiatives to international organisations like LEEDS and Energy Star rating the outcomes, the whole movement towards certified and transparent energy usage is the path for the future.

Organisations that are interested in contributing further to the triple bottom line can also contribute to reductions in the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions by:

1. Reducing demand for energy with smart metres and other energy-efficient measures for industry, businesses and the public sector
2. Reducing emissions by improving the energy efficiency of properties. Providing incentives for public and private organisations to take up more energy-efficient technologies and practices through the CRC energy efficiency scheme
