March 25, 2024 Biomass Boilers, Switching to Biomass Heating

Is a biomass boiler suitable for my home?

Biomass boilers can be used in both domestic and commercial installations. So, the simple answer is yes, a home biomass boiler can be a suitable option for home heating solutions.

But there are a few things to take into consideration before you go ahead and invest in a biomass heating solution.

WHERE ARE YOU?

Home biomass boilers tend to be used most commonly as an alternative to oil boilers. Oil boilers (with the large tanks you see in the gardens or garages of the properties they’re installed in) are typically used in homes that are off the gas grid.

More often than not, these are homes that are more rural in terms of their location. Few gas main networks extend beyond the fringes of any given town, meaning that you don’t have to be that rural to be in an off-gas grid location. If you’re currently making use of an oil boiler, then you’re most likely to be off the main gas grid and, if you have gas burning hob or oven, you’ll have gas cylinders too. This is an easy way to tell.

All of this doesn’t mean that if you are in a gas main location then a home biomass boiler is NOT suitable for you, it may well be.

HOW MUCH SPACE DO YOU HAVE FOR A HOME BIOMASS BOILER?

There’s no hiding the fact that a home biomass boiler would be significantly larger than its oil and gas counterparts. Therefore, it logically follows that you’re going to need some free space to put one.

In some instances, they can be put inside pre-existing buildings, such as outhouses, garages or barns. In other cases, a small structure is erected in which to house the new boiler. The space you have and the size of the boiler you require will all be factors in this part of the process.

HOW LARGE IS YOUR HOME?

Related to the previous point, the size of the home you have and the level of heating demand a boiler has to provide will all factor in to whether or not biomass is the best solution.

So, as with the previous point, you’ll need some spare space to fit one. The next point therefore is, how much is there to heat? If you’ve got a fairly modest-sized home with no especially large rooms then a smaller home biomass boiler will be suitable.

For larger homes, that perhaps have swimming pools and sizeable rooms to heat as well as multiple bathrooms or water tanks to keep warm, then a larger boiler with more substantial output capacity will be required.
