The Boiler Upgrade Scheme Fails To Pick Up
The first year of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme has not seen the widespread uptake the government hoped for. At the time of writing, the scheme has received
- 16,314 applications for air source heat pumps
- 487 applications for ground source heat pumps (plus 14 for the shared loop version)
- 186 applications for biomass boilers
for a total of 17,001 applications.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is set to run until 2028, and has £450m pounds of public funding to provide vouchers towards the cost of a new renewable heating system. Homeowners can claim:
- £5,000 towards an air source heat pump
- £6,000 towards a ground source heat pump
- £5,000 towards a biomass boiler
The Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee published the results of its inquiry into the scheme, and suggested that the government is unlikely to hit its target of 600,000 installations per year. It also concluded that:
- the government has not promoted the scheme enough, and because of that the public awareness is low
- the government’s messaging on hydrogen has been misleading, and has negatively affected uptake
- the grant does not offer enough help for most households
