Unused English forests could easily replace about 3 million barrels of crude oil. … If we just went and picked it up.

According to the Forestry Commission, about half of the woodland in England is under-managed. This means there is at least 2 million tonnes a year, that could be used for woodfuel and it is just sitting there as woodlands slowly rotting away.

They said that this amount could supply enough energy to heat the equivalent of 800 hospitals or 3,000 schools and save 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 a year, roughly the emissions from 3 million barrels of crude oil. On average, Europe’s forest area has risen by 834,499 ha (0.08%) per year since 1993. This is equivalent to an additional 1.3 million (approx.) football pitches of forest in Europe per year. The UK has sufficient existing forests to sustainably fuel (and without impacting the construction industry) approx.. 400,000 homes.

We thought this was an amazing fact and over a coffee with our CEO , asked him about the rude F word #FossilFuels

How is sustainably managed forest beyond fossil fuels?

Silvio Spiess

‘If you take out fossil fuel out of the ground, if you dig and get out some coal, get out some oil, it takes a few million years to have that replaced.

Okay, fine, then you can do it again.

But this will be 2000 generations after yourself.

So this is what we do not assume as sustainable. What we assume as sustainable is tree that you cut down, that grows, re-grows in months or years’ time, so we all would see that, our children would see that. I mean at the end of the day, you can’t compare it but it’s not comparable. The why the one is sustainable and the other not.’

What are your thoughts? How is renewable energy beyond fossil fuel? We hear about it a lot in various qualities of press reports, but to hold the answer in your hand about what it means to you is very different. Share with us your view!
